Why we started
Joseph was only 3 Years old when he lost his fight to Neuroblastoma. He was diagnosed in April 2021 and sadly lost his battle to cancer in December 2021. Throughout the ordeal, his strength and courage was truly remarkable and no matter what, Joseph kept on smiling with that big beautiful smile of his. It was his smile and courageous personality that’s what kept the family going, even through their darkest hours. But on top of dealing with Joseph’s diagnosis and his NHS treatment, the family had to endure a strenuous task of raising £300,000 to get Joseph extra treatment in New York that was not available on the NHS. This treatment was a trial and it was going to help Joseph keep the Neuroblastoma cells from returning. Unfortunately, the cancer returned before Joseph could even access this treatment and the family had to come to terms with the devastating and unimaginable loss.
The fundraising took away so many precious moments that could have been spent together, the pressures and burden of raising so much money to save your child is indescribable. However, even now, knowing what their future was, the family still would have continued to fundraise, because they knew that fundraising for that treatment could have helped save their precious boy. They only had one regret, they wished the fundraising didn’t take so much time away from their family life together, something that can now never be returned.
In Joseph’s legacy, the family started the charity ‘Joseph’s Smile’. The charities aim is to make sure that no other family endures the same fundraising burden and pressures as they suffered, so that ultimately, families can spend that precious quality time together. The charity intends to help families raise the essential funds that they need and to offer specialised support along the way. Together, with your help, children will be able to continue their fight through the help of Joseph’s Smile.
